The story for those who are interested:
Up in the mountains where I was, people don't go out at night in neighbor populations (which are extremely small).
Strange phenomena are said to happen frequently, from ghosts to strange lights going up the mountains.
This is the most charismatic of them all. My friend didn't want to tell me about this (his family was from there, he belongs to what you may classify as "decayed" noblemen).

Once his girlfriend couldn't stay for the night (this is a holidays house, a retreat) and had to drive all the way home with a friend - more than 30 kms on these unlit spooky roads- and she told me about a warning he gave her.
She is a psychologist (seen behind Elias here [link] ) and my friend is the most skeptic guy I have ever met, so we were both surprised about what he said:
Listen to me really good: when you pass through the crossing, no matter what you do, no matter what you see, do NOT stop. For nothing.

That wasn't at all reassuring to her and her friend. They went home, nothing happened.
My friend later asked him: what happen to the road behind the crossing? (she had seen it before)

Local folklore I found through him, after I headlocked him:
a very strange thing happens once in a while; on this very same road, many farmers see a road that just doesn't exist. Some passersby have thought the road continued instead of bifurcating and drove straight ahead.

The matter was so serious the local villagers made that Cross to protect the location. (100% Catholic population.)

Question is, my psychologist friend doesn't like to talk about it. Maybe it's her College education fighting through:

I just know what I saw.

I may redo this one, if you think it's worth it.
The place is far better than the photo.

Critiques

:iconfuriousennui:
One of the marks of a good artist is that they select the appropriate tool for the job. Art is both skill and crativity. DC has used both in this image to create a work that is both noteworthy as a standalone piece, but even more powerful when the back story is known.

The use of tonality and the desaturation lends an air of unrealism. The bifurcation of the road directs the eye through the whole image, with the crucifix to bring it back to the centre.

I would like to see a slightly stronger vignette to constrain the eye to the frame, and a little more of the tree on the right and at the top to create a visually more cohesive image. A littel more detail in the shadowed bank area, and a slight dodge/lighten around the crucifix would provide a stronger anchor point for the viewer, too.

Great photo, Damien----it has that odd moonlit look to it that you sometimes see when the moon is not quite full and the sky is kinda hazy. I love the story! :)
