Artist's Comments

First, respect the people portrayed. This woman has suffered a lot.

Meet Nazaré. I was sitting outside on my favourite café (esplanade) when this woman approached me and asked me for money to eat.
- Only if you let me take your photograph.
She looked at me suspiciously.
- What's your name?
- Nazaré.
- So what's your story, Nazaré?
- I'm running away from my husband.
I started shooting, I took quite a few photographs with the 50mm.
- I don't want my photo on television, she laughed. I'm so old and ugly.
- What? I would take you for a ride right now, honey!

It was very easy to make her laugh.;) She went inside and had a beer on me.
God knows she could use one.

Critiques

:iconjohnpaulthornton:
Anyone can grab a quick shot of a compelling face. But an artist shows us more humanity , not through their subject, but through their feelings and relationship to the subject. Damien-c provides us with the startling realization that he (and subsequently we) have made a respectful brush with the soul of the subject. I first became aware of damien-c's powerful images through his portraiture, which I am convinced is heightened by the fact that damien-c alone was there to engage this remarkable person. His use of technology to artistically amplify the sensation of depth and focus is a literal device: the depth and focus we sense in life's finest moments is as real as the characters we encounter.

I feed on this image, not just see it with my eyes. I feel it weigh on my heart.

You have an amazing way of photographing people. There is quite a story in that face.

thanks for that.

Those be m'favorite sorts of tales. Just enough to store away and, the next time I'm standing in line at the coffee shop, I'll think of her, and finish her little tale in my own head, and it'll pass the time.

I like this one better than the other one. This tells me more, more lines, more eyes, more Nazare

The other one is more of a blank to me.

Amazing story.
